LET’S ALL TAKE A DEEP BREATH

I’m seeing a lot of political panic. This is the closest election in modern history, and we are experiencing tremendous levels of stress. People on both sides of the political divide see this election as a fight for the fundamental rights of Americans and believe that democracy is at stake.

You may be experiencing impaired sleep, tension, restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, or a sense of impending doom. You may think it is warranted, but hang on; let’s take a deep breath. Don’t panic.

The truth is that civilization as we know it will not end with the outcome of this election. You will still wake up to your coffee, get your kids off to school, and head to work.

Here’s my advice:

#1 Vote.  It is your responsibility as a citizen. Voting is a civic duty of tremendous importance.

#2 Take a long view, not a short view. If your candidate does not win in this national election, there are still opportunities to express your views at state and local levels. Consider running for a local office, joining a movement, or volunteering for the causes that are most important to you. Turn your passion into positive action.

#3 Remain calm. I recommend a simple 54321 technique developed by psychologist Marsha Linehan. This method involves identifying 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.

No matter who wins, the path ahead lies in calmly working to make a positive impact in your corner of the world.
